Public Health
Conditions in Austria are excellent and Vienna's hospitals have
been awarded a high reputation internationally. The City's top medical
experts are available to everyone in Vienna regardless of their
age, income or living circumstances and travellers can rely on the
Austrian health system without travel insurance should they fall
sick during their travels in Vienna. EU citizens must fill in form
sheet E111 to make use of medical services in Austria.
Social insurance
agreements have been signed with the following countries: Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Iceland, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Norway, Sweden, Serbia,
Slovenia and Turkey. Nationals of these countries may have a care/treatment
voucher issued with their health insurance which is then exchanged
for a health insurance ticket (Krankenschein) at a regional health
fund in Austria.
Travellers from
countries outside the European Union and the countries mentioned
above should arrange travel insurance before leaving home and in
fact it is also advisable for all travellers to Vienna to get extra
health insurance cover in the event of needing medical attention
while travelling.

In Vienna most
drugs are not available over-the-counter and you must have a prescription
of a doctor to obtain them. Non-prescription drugs like are only
available in a pharmacy and not in drugstores (Drogerien).
Pharmacies
opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and
from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Saturdays from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Anyhow there
are always 24-hours/7-days open locations throughout the city and
a list of the nearest open pharmacy is posted outside of each pharmacy.
