The Palais Coburg, in the heart of Vienna, is a fascinating building whose architectural uniqueness brings to life six centuries of history. Tradition and innovation, research, culture and forward looking technologies are brought together here in a manner unique in the world. The guiding principle of "preserving the past - shaping the future" is a living reality. Relaxing, feeling at ease, the creative exchange of ideas, thrilling encounters and gastronomic delights in a historic-modern ambiance are all part of this outstanding concept. The Palais Coburg is a wholly special place.

The Palais Coburg was built in the period 1840-45 by duke Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1785-1851) on the Braunbastei ['Brown Bastion'] - a part of the city defenses dating back to the 16th century. It is thanks to this "super-construction" that a large part of the Renaissance fortification, in particular the casemates, have been preserved for us today. The design for the Palais, dating from 1839, is by the architect Karl Schleps, who was practically unknown in Vienna. Following his sudden death in 1840, the building of the Palais was undertaken by the master builder Adolph Korompay.

The late Neo-Classical/early historic building is notable above all for its portico with its freestanding columns in the central section of the façade. This feature soon led to the Palais being given an affectionate nickname by the locals, the "Spargelburg" [literally, the "castle of asparagus"]. As early as 1849, parts of the Palais had already been adapted and leased as a means of earning money. At the end of the second world war, the Palais was damaged by artillery fire and bombing.

The right section of the portico on the Coburgbastei was struck by a bomb and two of the statues were lost from the attic level. All our suites are mainly spread over two floors of the building. Each suite is individually furnished. Embracing the hotel's slogan, "preserving the past and shaping the future", in these rooms the visitor is frequently reminded of the historic setting in which he is staying, whilst at the same time he does not have to forego the quality and comforts of a luxury-class hotel.

Each of the suites is named after one of the historic personalities who were part of the family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha or are connected with it and with the history of the building. Thus here you will find representatives of the ruling houses of Great Britain, France, Hungary, Portugal, Bulgaria, Belgium and Austria. On the basis of their furnishings and their position in the Palais, the suites have been divided into four different categories - the Imperial, Palais, City and Modern Suites - which take into account the different needs and personal taste of guests.
